To make the gnome you start with white crew sock.
Cut of the top as shown in photo. Cut from Heal up.
Sock piece should be about 7” to 9” long.
Now to fill the sock with some beans or rice. I used a 16-oz. tumbler to stretch the sock
over to hold it open to fill with filler.
Fill it and shake it down and add a little more. If you are using a Styrofoam ball for nose ad
it before gathering the top together and place a small hair tie to hold it
while you tie it securely with some string. Find your nose in front put hair
tie around it until you have a good placement (see photo).
Stretch the top of sock above the tie to
flatten it and help you attach the cone easily to the top. Take your approx. 7-inch
cone and cut off a couple inches if you want your gnome’s hat to be a little
shorter. Apply glue liberally to top of
sock and place cone on top. Then apply
glue under the flap to secure the hat cone to the sock body.
Now it is time to dress your gnome. You will need two decorative fuzzy
socks.
Stripes, poke dots, there are all
kind of patterns. Choose one and cut the
Top of sock off leaving the heal on the other piece. It could be the hat of
your next gnome.
Place the cuff of the sock so finished edge is
at the bottom of the gnome. Tuck the cut
end up under his nose. Use glue gun to
secure the sock to the body. Be careful of the hot glue.
Now it is beard time there are many ways to add the beard.
Fun fur is a favorite. Cut in to a
triangle and put on under nose and the edge of hat. I looked and found the great textured yarn so
I wrapped around some packing tape. Wrap
it like you’re making a tassel. Use a short piece of yarn to gather yarn. Cut
the loops and secure the beard around the nose to hold on the tassel part. Trim off extra and use it to fill in beard on
either side of the tassel.
Be careful of
the hot glue
When the beard looks satisfactory it is time to put on his hat.
Use a different pattern of sock make same cut but this time we will use the
foot part of sock. Place it on the cone and put the heal of the sock on the
back of the gnome tuck the edge and glue it to the other sock. Hat goes over the nose and over the sides of
the beard. Keep gluing all the way around to seal it all together. Now you add whatever decorations you want. Buttons,
gems or whatever you like. I also and a
puff ball or bell to the tip of his hat.
You should have a finished gnome.
